Library Policies

Charging Out Library Materials
Patrons may charge materials out at the Circulation Desk of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library with a valid Yale University or Medical Library Privilege Card. Please see the Library's Privileges Guide for details on who may borrow materials.

Loan Periods & Late Fines
Regular Collection:  Books and audiocassette tapes from the modern collection circulate for two months and can be renewed. Videocassettes circulate for one week.  Renewal request forms are available at the Circulation Desk and electronically. Renewal requests must be received during Library hours on or before the due date. Items on hold will be kept on the "Hold Shelf" behind the Circulation desk for seven (7) days. Late fines are $0.50 per day per item past due date.
Theses:  Theses cannot be renewed electronically, with the exception of a copy two nursing thesis.
Course Reserve and Closed Reserve:  These materials are for "in building use only."  The loan period is two (2) hours and items can be renewed. Late fines are $0.05 per minute per item; $25.00 maximum.
Reserve Room Materials: Reserve Room materials can be borrowed one and a half (1.5) hours before the Library closes, and must be returned when the Library opens the following day at the Circulation Desk.
Three-Day Reserves: These materials are allowed to circulate for up to three days. Special Note: These materials are for three days only and cannot be renewed online or by email. Historical collection: Books from the Historical Collection circulate for two months. Late fines are $0.50 per day per item past due date.

Placing a Hold On or Recalling Charged Materials
Materials that are listed in ORBIS as charged out may be placed on hold when they are returned or recalled from the person currently borrowing the material. Holds and recalls can be requested at the Circulation Desk at the Medical Library. An electronic request form is also available to place a hold on or to recall a book.

Renewing a Charged Book
You may renew a book up to eight (8) times if no one else has placed a hold on it or has recalled it. To do so, place a request at the Circulation Desk at the Medical Library. An electronic request form is also available to renew a charged book.
