Network connections and wireless access points for laptops are available in the Medical and EPH Libraries. Wireless access is also available at other locations in the medical center and on Yale's central campus. All devices must be registered with ITS-MED before they will work on the university network. For those users without wireless capability, the Library loans external wireless cards for use while in the Library.
Faculty and Staff may use the wired jacks only if their laptop's ethernet port is registered for use on the Yale network. Network access for faculty and staff is a billable service provided through ITS-MED. Faculty and staff access to the wireless network also requires a core network account. See ITS-MED wireless networking for information on registering faculty or staff wireless devices for use on the Yale wireless network.Students may use either the wired or wireless network with their personal laptop. School of Medicine students may register up to three Ethernet devices (e.g., wired ethernet port, wireless card, WiFi-enabled PDA).
Medical School students needing assistance should contact Steve Ongley, Computer Support Specialist (steven.ongley@yale.edu, 785-5770) or go to the ITS-MED Computing and Media Center. Yale School of Nursing Students should contact Keith Wilkinson in the YSN Computer Lab (keith.wilkinson@yale.edu, 785-5405)
- Harkness Dorm residents should register their WIRED ethernet connection on the Harkness Signup Page
- School of Medicine and School of Nursing students should register other devices on the Student Roaming and Wireless Connection Sign Up Form
- Central campus students should register with Central Campus ITS
WIRELESS NETWORK ACCESS
Connecting to Yale's Wireless Network
Your wireless card may detect several networks in the vicinity when you turn on your computer's wireless card. You should select the network identified as yale wireless. Computers running Windows XP and Macs will connect more or less automatically but older operating systems (Windows NT, ME, etc.) may require you to manually input yale wireless as the "network name" (also known as the "SSID"). This must be input exactly - all lowercase letters and with a space between "yale" and "wireless". Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) must be set to obtain an IP address automatically. You also might need to set your "Computer Name" so that it has a unique name on the Yale network. ITS-MED recommends that you set the computer name to your NETID.Students can get assistance configuring their wireless connections from Steve Ongley, Computer Support Specialist, for assistance: steven.ongley@yale.edu, 785-5770 or from the ITS-MED Computing and Media Center.
Wireless Coverage Areas in the Medical Center
Wireless access points are active in a number of locations around the Medical School campus including:You are also able to use the Yale Wireless network in many locations on Yale's central campus as detailed on the Map of Wireless Access Areas on Central Campus
- Cushing Whitney Medical Library (CWML)
- Epidemiology and Public Health Library
- Basement of LEPH (Winslow Auditorium and surrounding space)
- Marigolds (and adjoining courtyard)
- Hope Building, 2nd floor
- The Anlyan Center (2nd floor, academic wing)
- All locations are listed on the Map of University Wireless Access Areas at the Medical Center
VPN (Virtual Private Networking) Requirement for Wireless Networking
Wireless networking is potentially less secure than wired network connections. To increase security on the wireless network, ITS-MED now requires a VPN connection for all users of the Yale wireless network on the Medical School campus. The VPN service can be used by any Yale University employee or affiliate with an activated NETID. You must use your NetID and NetID password to download the VPN software and then to login into the VPN each time you make a connection on the wireless network anywhere at Yale. For more Information, see:Information on Wireless security at YSM Getting and using the VPN Client software Further Information on Wireless Networking at Yale
For information on performance, security, purchasing cards and other issues, go to the ITS-MED Wireless Networking page or the ITS Data Network Operations page on Wireless Networking at Yale
Borrowing a Wireless Card for use in the Library
You may borrow an external PCMCIA wireless
card for use while in the Library. Eligibility and procedures are explained

Wireless PDAs
PDAs with WiFi capability may be used
on the Yale wireless network. The device's ethernet address must be registered
as with any other device and the same eligibility rules apply. PDAs also must
use a VPN client for Web access. More details about using a Palm or PocketPC
are available on the ITS-MED
VPN page
