Research

Clinical Research
Perinatal Medicine has participated in the NICHD Neonatal Research Network and the Yale GCRC grant for many years. There are currently 13 active clinical research protocols in the NBSCU, including 7 Network trials. Areas of active research cover a broad spectrum including the use of hypothermia for the management of infants with severe asphyxia, early diagnosis of candidiasis, biomarker epidemiology of disorders in extremely low birth gestational age newborns, the genetic component of common neonatal disorders with a focus on bronchopulmonary dysplasia and intra ventricular hemorrhage, and circulating stem cells in premature neonates - correlation with recovery from lung disease.

Laboratory Research
Faculty and fellows are actively engaged in basic research with a focus on developmental biology. Many of these studies are being conducted in collaboration with research groups outside the Department of Pediatrics. Areas of investigation include: molecular genetics of red cell disorders, developmental erthyropoiesis, mechanisms of diabetic embryopathy, molecular genetics of reading disability (dyslexia), role of adenosine receptors in periventricular leukomalacia; role of VEGF in hyperglycemia induced vasculopathy/embryopathy; genetics of opioid, cocaine and alcohol dependence; and, role of cytokines and regulation of surfactant production in lung development.
