Education

Respiratory Medicine Fellowship Program

Our fellowship program is aimed at training physicians and scientists in respiratory diseases, lung biology and physiology. The Section of Respiratory Medicine is presently composed of six full time and one part time faculty members. In addition to clinical training, our fellowship program has a special emphasis on teaching and research in a rich research environment created by the faculty in the section and the Department. Fellows have at least two-thirds of their time protected for research and have during the 3-year period didactic courses in Statistics, experimental design, scientific and grant writing and state-of-the art methodologies in basic research tailored to their own interests and needs.

Clinical and Research Training

The clinical arm of Respiratory Medicine has special emphasis on the care of patients with asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic lung disease of prematurity, sleep disorders and a host of other acute and chronic conditions. A clinical rotation in the Pediatric ICU is required, and elective rotations in adult Pulmonology or Anesthesia are encouraged, rendering the clinical experience of a pulmonary fellow broad-based and of the highest quality. A clinical research program, mostly involved with applied sleep physiology, has been very active. We have special interests in cystic fibrosis, asthma and sleep-related phenomena such as upper airway obstruction, sleep hypoventilation syndromes, sleep apnea, obesity-associated hypoventilation and apnea and bradycardia of prematurity. Respiratory Medicine has a strong research arm and will have a special emphasis on teaching and research. We have currently several major research thrusts, addressing questions of clinical and fundamental importance at both cellular/molecular and applied levels. Each of our full time faculty member has his/her research interest in our own laboratories, making the research environment very productive, enjoyable and stimulating.
