About Us

The Yale Comprehensive Section of Gynecologic Oncology brings together a team of clinicians whose focus is caring for women with gynecologic cancer. Faculty members are board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in the subspecialty of gynecologic oncology, which unites surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy into the oncologic management of patients. The Section is a key component of the Yale Cancer Center, which is the only NCI designated center in Southern New England. Section members play a vital role in bringing new modalities in diagnosing and treating gynecologic malignancies into clinical practice. For example, Yale offers the only program in the state for the early detection of ovarian cancer and has developed the use of chemotherapy prior to surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) in the management of advanced stage ovarian cancer.

Patients are managed through weekly conferences with physician representation from disciplines such as medical oncology, therapeutic radiology, pathology and gynecologic oncology to ensure that the most beneficial course of action is developed for them. The Section's resources are complemented with facilities dedicated to the care of women with gynecologic cancer. A 28 bed inpatient unit located in the new West Pavilion of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the outpatient treatment area are staffed with nurses whose focus is on caring for patients with gynecologic cancer. This unit recently received the highest score in a patient satisfaction survey conducted at the Yale-New Haven Hospital.
