Individual traveler
Before leaving on your trip abroad, you should:
- Familiarize yourself with your destination. Resources include:
- Make an appointment with the Travel Clinic
- Understand how your health insurance will respond while you are abroad
- Do you have coverage for routine care?
- Are there higher copayments?
- Is there prescription coverage?
- Are there excluded activities or geographic areas?
- Obtain additional coverage if needed.
- Update your passport if necessary
- Apply for a visa, if required
- Yale College students must sign travel waiver
- Attend Program Pre-Trip Orientation
- Register your travel and provide emergency contact information to, and leave a copy of your passport/visa with your Faculty Leader, Trip Sponsor, or Student Organization
- Get a copy of your MEDEX ID card & Description Guide. Keep your MEDEX card in your wallet or passport in the event of an emergency.
- Understand what to do in an emergency.
- Carry a Global cell phone or at least a pre-paid phone card if traveling internationally.
- Be familiar with the University's polices and procedures regarding conduct and travel.
Upon arrival in your host country, you should:
- Attend any orientation upon arrival in country.
- Register with the local U.S. Embassy or consular service.
- Stay in regular contact with advisor, colleagues, friends.
